In the world of communication and media, the innovation brought by artificial intelligence is redefining the very concepts of “voice” and “truth”.
The most recent development comes from the integration of advanced generative models into newsrooms and production studios: AI can now generate realistic video and audio content, including digital avatars with synthetic voices indistinguishable from human ones, and even fully automated newscasts.
Multimedia platforms are adopting these technologies to offer continuous, personalised updates, in multiple languages and in real time. Traditional newspapers, for their part, are experimenting with AI for automated fact-checking and automated editing, and with the automated production of synthetic video content, where text, images and voices are assembled in a matter of seconds into fully-fledged news services. One example is Channel 1, an American platform currently in beta, which aims to replace much of the routine journalistic work with animated avatars reading news written by artificial intelligence.
This transformation brings thorny questions with it: who controls the narrative? How transparent is the news-generation process? The risk of manipulation increases, as does the possibility of large-scale disinformation. But there is another side to the coin too: access to information is democratised, voices multiply, and language barriers are broken down.
In a world where any content can be synthesised, the greatest challenge will be to keep the relationship between those who communicate and those who listen authentic.
